They still generate lots of green light so house plants looknice. A common misconceptionis that the ideal color of light for plant growth is sunlight. Much ofthe light spectrum of sunlight is actually wasted by plants. Again,plants are green because they reflect the green light back. The popular"Grow & Show" wide spectrum type of plant light sold in stores maymake foliage look nice and green. But they are not efficient at makingplants grow. You can verify in a standard encyclopedia that plants usered and blue energy for photosynthesis. While at the same time they actually make much more blue light thanhigh color temperature sources like metal halide. What’s interesting isthat the type of deep red light that is most nutritious for plants isbarely perceptible by the human eye. So paradoxically, these bulbs lookbluish to the eye even though they actually make more red light thanblue.Q:Do I need the daylight bulbs or a metal halide spectrum for vegetativegrowth and then a second set of warm (HPS -like ) bulbs for flowering?A: No.The narrow spectrum bulbs are the best all around bulbs for growing,fruiting, and flowering. You see, HPS lamps make lots of energy thatplants need for flowering, but the defective HPS light spectrumproduces lanky, stringy growth. (HPS is the same bulb used in streetlights) So people will often start plants under a white light likemetal halide to encourage compact growth even though metal halide bulbsare dimmer.Butwith narrow spectrum fluorescents, you don’t have to compromise. Lightis generated just where plants can most effectively use it. Q: What about FluorX spectrum? A:The FluorX spectrum is actually identical to our sunlight simulating 5Klamp. It can be used to provide side lighting in HPS systems which aredefective in blue light. People have gone crazy over the brilliantfluorX. (I use it in most of our shop and barn lighting fixtures) Butwhile it looks really bright to the eye, but its not the best spectrumfor growing plants. You could Save a lot of money if you couldgrow plants in the DARKWhenI first went into Business , the best advice I ever got was “it’s easyto sell as long as you are in business to help people” We seek to serveyou in part by divulging all sorts of good accurate information.Thereis confusion and misinformation about how much light different sourcesgenerate. Below is a comparison. Notice how High Output T8’s make morelight using less energy than the much more expensive compactfluorescents. Also notice that not all T8 fixture are the same, notwithstanding that many are often labeled as “high output” when they arenot. The amount of light that you get out of a fixture varies with theballast used. It’s not necessarily the rated output printed on thelamp.
